On April 12, Return to Order author John Horvat II visited at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas to address students on topics related to the book.
Mr. Horvat spoke to one of the business school’s graduate classes that uses his book as a textbook. The students took advantage of the occasion for a question and answer session about what they had studied.
“I was surprised at how well the book lent itself to being a college course,” Mr. Horvat commented. “The student questions were extremely interesting.”
The TFP author also gave the final ethics and moral seminar for graduating business and accounting majors. He delivered a similar seminar last year.
The topic of the talk was “Looking at Economy Based on a Rule of Honor.” He discussed an economic culture based on honor as means to providing a moral solution to a frenetic economy.
The one-hour seminar drew from ideas found in the book, Return to Order: From a Frenzied Economy to an Organic Christian Society—Where We’ve Been, How We Go Here, and Where We Need to Go. The author showed how a society and economy based on honor is possible. It is based on the Catholic model of the family and honoring of your father and mother. It latter extends itself beyond in all aspects of life. This society of honor is the natural backdrop for a flourishing economy. Those who lead a Catholic life will naturally make decisions that favor a rule of honor over money.
What Does Saint Thomas Say About Immigration?
“What is needed is a profound change of attitude from the extreme individualism of our days. We need to get rid of the idea that the sole purpose of life is the gratification of desires,” Mr. Horvat said. “The real purpose of life is sanctification and salvation. And one of the ways we do this is through our love of God and through the instrument of honor in the family and society as a whole.”
Mr. Horvat has spoken on several campuses and found students receptive to the idea of a return to order.
