Such an assumption is based on the idea that Ukraine only manages to survive because of its almost total dependency on the military aid of America and its allies. However, one big factor often excluded from the debate over its future is that Ukraine is now the strongest military power in Europe.

Ukraine’s greatest asset is its will to engage in an existential battle for survival. Russia’s unjust war has driven Ukraine from a pre-war point of little preparation and military might to a tough force willing to confront extraordinary obstacles.
Incredible Military Feats
Ukraine has held its own in the face of incredible odds. It took back half of all the territory the Russian army seized since Putin’s unjust February 24, 2022 invasion. Its army even invaded Russia and occupied territory. Its sea drones have revolutionized sea combat and forced Russia’s Black Sea fleet to retreat from its occupied Crimean base. Airborne drones penetrate deep into Russian territory with increasing frequency. These same drones work with ruthless efficiency on the frontlines, where Russian troops pay dearly for every foot of ground gained.
An Increasingly Ukrainian Role
One of the most impressive accomplishments of the war is that it is becoming increasingly Ukrainian-driven.
The nation has managed to put and keep one million citizens under arms—four times more than Europe’s next largest military. Unlike the Russians, who employ thousands of North Korean mercenaries, no other nation’s troops have joined Ukraine on the battlefield, only foreign volunteers. It is by far the continent’s most battle-hardened and effective fighting force.

Ukraine is anything but a beggar nation that survives only on military alms. It has developed highly innovative technologies and expanded defense capacities to supply its own needs. In some fields, Ukrainians are producing more weapons and munitions than European allies or even the United States.
Such accomplishments are not those of a desperate nation but a determined people.
Expanding Capacities
When Russia invaded in 2022, Ukraine could produce $1 billion worth of war matériel. Today, that capacity has ballooned to $35 billion. From a near-total position of dependency on allies, Ukraine now makes about one-third of all weapons, ammunition, and related equipment. This capacity to supply its war effort is growing, even as Russia ruthlessly bombs the nation’s vital infrastructure.
The country is even inviting other nations to invest in its defense sectors since its weapon systems are battle-tested and much sought after. Several companies are investing funds or engaging in joint ventures.
Producing World-Class Drones
In the field of drones, tech-savvy Ukrainians produce nearly one hundred percent of their needs. Over 200 businesses produce millions of drones annually. Drone developers now produce highly adaptive products that are described as the Mercedes of the field.

Because drone operators constantly improvise during battle, Ukraine is the world leader in drone technology. It is leagues ahead of everyone, including the United States. Far from draining American stockpiles and capacity, Ukraine is contributing to the defense of the West gratuitously.
Howitzers and Missiles
In addition to drones, Ukraine is domestically developing hybrid missile drones and missiles capable of striking deep inside Russia. Ukrainian companies have also taken older Western and even ancient Soviet-era weapon systems and improved upon them, giving them a role in the fighting.
Perhaps one of the interesting developments of the Ukrainian arms industry is its manufacture of excellent howitzers. The 2S22 Bohdana self-propelled howitzer has a 40 km (24 miles) range and has proven effective in destroying enemy positions.
Ukraine now produces 40 of these howitzers monthly, on par with Russia’s ramped-up war production levels. Such howitzer production exceeds that of France (with 8 Caesar canons per month) and Germany (with 5-6 Panzerhaubitze howitzers per year). The United States is currently producing its Paladin system at a rate of 4 howitzers per month.
A Position of Strength
Of course, Ukraine still needs Western military aid to keep fighting Russia. The brave nation has many shortcomings that still need to be overcome, but what it has done in these three years of war is just amazing.

Ukraine is operating from a position of strength, not weakness. Its strong will to fight for its survival has proven itself in spades. In the fight for the West, Ukraine is more than doing its share. The West should continue its military and other aid, increasing it if possible, seriously helping this valorous nation in its fight to be part of the future.
