In July, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill wrongly called the Respect for Marriage Act by a 267-157 vote. The bill counted on the support of 47 Republican House members who broke with their party’s platform and approved the codification of same-sex “marriage” and other aberrations into federal law.
Even without the Republican support, the Democrat-ruled House had the votes to pass the travesty. However, the bill now sits in the Senate, where it needs the backing of ten Republican senators to break the filibuster and get it to the floor, where the Democrats will have just enough votes to pass it.
Thus, the bill’s passage is solely in the hands of the Republican Party. One word from the Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell asking for unity on this vote is enough to stop it cold. Yet there is talk that ten Republican senators might be found to put the bill on the path to becoming law.
Taking Away All Imagined Rights
The Respect for Marriage Act is revenge for the Dobbs v. Jackson Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade. There is no other way to describe it. It is political theater that uses the decision to frighten moderates into accepting the left’s agenda.
In his opinion supporting Dobbs, Justice Clarence Thomas correctly claimed that the same faulty interpretation of the Fourteen Amendment that fabricated the “right” to abortion also applies to similar “rights” like same-sex “marriage” and contraception.
Capitalizing on this statement, the Democrats are using the conclusion to accomplish two goals. The first is to create an irrational fear on the left that its whole agenda is in imminent danger, even though, unfortunately, there are no court cases now threatening these issues. Thus, the Respect for Marriage Act is a fear-mongering show dramatizing the issue. It imagines the taking away of all imagined “rights.”

Destruction of Marriage Act
The second goal is to destroy marriage further. The Respect for Marriage Act is better dubbed the Destruction of Marriage Act. Its advocates portray conservatives as radicals while allowing liberals to radicalize their positions.
Thus, the bill does not just keep same-sex “marriage” legal as its promoters insinuate. It calls for codifying same-sex “marriage” into federal law, making it much more difficult, if not impossible, to overturn the Obergefell ruling. The act would put marriage law in federal hands, forcing the recognition of any aberrations that blue-state legislators might later imagine.
The bill also facilitates the legal action of activist groups against the religious objections of individuals, organizations and businesses that rightly affirm marriage is only between one man and one woman.
Thus, the left gains immensely with the passage of this bad bill. The right has everything to lose by supporting it. The fate of this harmful legislative initiative is in the hands of ten GOP senators who may vacillate and betray their constituents.

Overcoming Cowardice
The action of these vacillating senators is difficult to understand. A “no” vote is a win-win and simple option. It means sticking with the GOP platform. However, two possible reasons for their wavering should be denounced without mincing words.
The first reason is cowardice. In modern politics, politicians fear polls and eschew principles. They are afraid to appear contrary to the times. They tend to follow the worn liberal narratives that history inevitably moves to the left. Thus, imagined freedoms can never be overturned lest one ends up on “the wrong side of history,” even if this means being on the side of God and truth.
In addition, conservatives are duped into believing that all liberal schemes are immensely popular—because the media say they are. The role of the conservative politician is reduced to engaging in a reluctant rearguard action to minimize the damage of harmful but irresistible liberal ideas.
Indeed, the fear of being different from others weighs heavily upon society. However, this fear is all the more irrational in light of the spectacular defeat of Roe v. Wade. The ruling proved how flimsy the theory of the inevitable course of history is. The Dobbs decision proposes a proven path to victory that energizes voters and buttresses principles.

This is why GOP senators need to abandon the politics of cowardice and stop this nefarious bill cold. Building upon Dobbs, they need to have the courage to say no. The decision lies in their hands.
The Mark of Betrayal
The second reason why these senators vacillate is more tragic. It consists of a position beyond cowardice that is motivated by fear. It involves political opportunism, which is not afraid to betray principles or the party platform, which state that marriage is only the union of a man and a woman.
This group of politicians betrays voters’ trust by supporting the other side’s agenda. In this case, they enable the advances of those who undermine the family. They believe that by compromising here and there with liberal views, the other side will slow its advance. However, they are not true believers in the party platform and show their Judas colors at critical moments.
There is no reason for the Respect for Marriage Act to pass. Conservatives should capitalize on the momentum of the Dobbs victory and energize their base by rejecting it.

Whether by cowardice or betrayal, ten GOP senators may decide the future of marriage. Will America witness a GOP-enabled destruction of marriage?
